JEAN-LOUIS BROSSARD CO-FOUNDER OF LES RENCONTRES TRANS MUSICALES IN RENNES, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters Lifetime Achievement Award received in 2016 in Groningen as part of the European Festival Awards With a father who was a music teacher and ten years of classical violin training, Jean-Louis Brossard developed a deep passion for rock music. Despite his academic path, his true calling remained musical. He nurtured this passion by listening to the "Pop Club" radio show and avidly collecting imported vinyl records. In 1977, he joined Hervé Bordier and, along with Béatrice Macé, became part of the Terrapin association, which later became ATM (Association Trans Musicales). In 1979, they launched Les Rencontres Trans Musicales de Rennes, a festival that highlighted the dynamic and diverse musical scene of Rennes, represented at the time by artists such as Marquis de Sade, Étienne Daho, and Les Nus. Nearly four decades later, the Trans Musicales remains a hub for musical discovery. This constant creative energy is what sets the event apart, attracting over 65,000 attendees each year with around 90 performing acts, all within an exceptional musical atmosphere. Many artists, including Lenny Kravitz, Ben Harper, Björk, and Daft Punk, performed for the first time in France at the Trans Musicales. Determined that the festival should not be a once-a-year event limited to the people of Rennes, ATM took over the management of the Ubu venue in 1987. Since then, it has become a major venue for year-round music performances, with Jean-Louis Brossard in charge of its programming. Focused on showcasing unique artists and supporting their creative processes (through rehearsals, run-throughs, creative residencies, etc.), the artistic project of the Association Trans Musicales also encompasses a cultural mission, promoting cultural diversity and making music accessible to all audiences.
