By 2023, there will be 3,500 third places in France, 30% of them cultural. These multi-faceted initiatives are part of the long history of popular education and the social economy, and are in line with the practices of intermediary, independent and shared spaces.
As places of shared work, collective production, civic mobilisation, artistic creation and dissemination, sporting activities and catering, third places place at the heart of their operation and programming the issues of social cohesion, civic engagement and cultural rights, hybridisation and transition.
Cultural third places offer an experience of the arts and culture where residents can be both observers and players, where artists can have access to independent work spaces that meet their needs in terms of creative freedom and encounters with uninitiated audiences, particularly in the field of music.
The aim of this conference is to present and debate with these players, who continue to grow in all regions and on all scales:
- How are third places questioning the place of art and culture in society?
- How does culture, and more specifically music, fit into these spaces?
- How can the use of a space be rethought through its design/refurbishment and how can its new activities fit into the existing fabric of a district/territory?
- How are cultural third places organised in terms of economic models and governance?
