Recommendation algorithms are everywhere on streaming platforms, shaping at scale the way we discover music and particularly the music genres we listen to and the emerging artists that are brought to our notice. These algorithms are however most opaque and strong discrepancies have been noticed, favouring men and mainstream music genres to the detriment of women, gender minorities and cultural diversity. Is it possible to make music algorithms more inclusive and representative? And if so, how and at which level?
